As an OEM or ISV, you're a trusted technology partner to your customers. And they rely on you to help them make the right choices when it comes to open-source software. That's why at SpikeSource we are relentless in our effort to deliver business-ready, open-source infrastructure that has been thoroughly tested and integrated. And it all starts with the Spike™ Stacks.
Spike Stacks
Spike Stacks include more than fifty open source components in six programming languages from a range of SpikeSource-supported applications, libraries, Web servers and tools. We offer three prebuilt Spike Stacks using combinations of these components as well as the ability for you to create fully configured and validated made-to-order stacks.
Our stacks include add-on features that speed implementation and ease application management. They include common configuration runtime management, a GUI tool to manage the configuration of installed components, and a set of sample applications.
Spike Stacks bring together the leading open-source infrastructure components that you depend on for your Web applications, and provide several features that are key to the flexibility and reliability of these solutions:
- Allows programming of dynamic Web applications in six programming languages
- Provides support for publishing and calling Web services
- Supports standards-based integration with other enterprise software
- Includes a choice of data storage engine

You're choosing a predefined stack to save time and effort. Why, then, do some stack installers just drop the components into your filesystem and not configure them to work with each other?
SpikeSource stacks are downloaded and installed as a stack, not just a bag of components. This means that when you select a stack, SpikeSource takes over the various component downloads, sandbox creation, and component installation—all in one operation. And when the install is complete, you'll find all the components fully configured to work together, running, and ready to go.
Of course, configuration doesn't end when the stack is installed. Developers or IT personnel may need to update the stack configuration—perhaps to change a port number or a file location, or to turn an application feature on or off.
Many open-source components, however, have their own idiosyncratic configuration mechanisms, with different configuration file locations and syntax. Additionally, an update to one file frequently needs to be matched by other updates if components are to work together properly.
The SpikeSource Configuration Manager makes stack configuration updates easier. It provides a unified interface to the configurations for every component in the stack, and matches changes across multiple component configurations to keep them working together.
